Tesla out of warranty? Your service options in the GTA
Your Tesla's basic warranty has ended — or it's about to. That moment used to mean one thing: the Tesla Service Centre, its prices, and its wait times. Not anymore. The first big wave of Teslas sold in Ontario (roughly 2019–2022 cars) is now out of warranty, and a real independent service scene has grown up across the GTA to look after them. Here's how to think about where to take your car, and for what.
First, the reassuring part
Servicing your Tesla at an independent shop does not void your remaining warranty in Canada. If part of your car is still covered — most importantly the battery and drive unit warranty, which runs longer than the basic warranty on most models — routine maintenance and repairs done elsewhere don't cancel that coverage. What an independent can't do is perform a repair under Tesla's warranty and bill Tesla for it. Warranty work itself still has to happen at Tesla.
What independent shops in the GTA handle well
Most of what a Tesla actually needs after a few Ontario winters is not exotic. It's the same wear-and-tear work any good shop does — with EV-specific knowledge layered on top. Independents in our directory list services like:
- Brakes and brake cleaning — including the corrosion service Ontario cars need (more on that in our brake guide)
- Suspension — control arms, ball joints and wheel bearings are well-known wear items on the Model 3 and Y, and EVs are heavy, so they work hard
- Tires, rotation and wheel alignment — EVs wear tires faster than comparable gas cars
- 12V battery replacement — the small battery that runs the car's electronics, and a common cause of "won't wake up" mornings
- HVAC and heat pump service
- Diagnostics, cabin filters and general maintenance
This is the bread and butter of shops like Radman Auto Repair in Etobicoke, which works on the Model 3, Y, S and X, and AutoNiche in Markham. The EuroMechanic network locations — McDermott Motors downtown, McNally Auto in North York and Redline Automotive in Scarborough — cover Tesla tires, brakes, suspension and diagnostics. In Brampton, Reliance Auto Mechanic and G.C. Tirecraft both publish dedicated Tesla service pages. Prefer not to go anywhere at all? Kambio offers mobile Tesla maintenance across the GTA, and Sparky X does mobile Tesla tire service. Browse them all on the EV repair in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton and Hamilton pages.
When you still need Tesla
Some jobs still belong at the Service Centre:
- Safety recalls. Recalls are completed by Tesla at no charge, wherever you normally service the car. Never pay an independent to fix a recall item.
- Repairs covered by a warranty that's still active. If your battery or drive unit fails inside its warranty period, that's Tesla's bill, not yours.
- Deep high-voltage and software-level work that requires Tesla's proprietary systems — unless a shop explicitly offers it. Very few independents do genuine high-voltage battery work; in our directory, Mechanic Nation in Scarborough lists high-voltage battery repair and replacement, drive unit service and heat pump repair among its services. If a shop can't clearly describe its high-voltage capability, that's your answer — ask before you book.
Collision work is its own category: if it's body damage, look for a certified collision centre such as CSN Avenue Collision in Toronto, a Tesla-certified collision centre.
Choosing between Tesla and an independent
A sensible split for most out-of-warranty owners: use independents for wear items, maintenance and diagnosis — often with shorter waits and a conversation with the person who'll actually do the work — and keep Tesla for recalls and anything you believe is warranty-covered. Whichever you choose, keep your invoices. A complete service history protects the value of the battery warranty you still have and helps at resale.
