EV battery repair vs. replacement: what it actually costs in Ontario

Nothing concentrates an EV owner's mind like a battery warning light. The battery is the most expensive component in the car, and the internet is full of worst-case stories. But "the battery needs work" does not automatically mean "the car needs a whole new battery." In the GTA, a small number of shops can open a pack, find what's actually failed, and repair it — and the difference between that repair and a full replacement can be the difference between keeping your car and writing it off. Here's how to think about it, honestly.

What's actually inside the pack

Your car's battery isn't one big battery. It's a pack containing modules, and each module contains individual cells, all watched over by a battery management system (BMS). Failures are often localised: one weak module dragging the whole pack down, a failed sensor or contactor, a cooling problem, or a charging fault. That's why diagnosis comes first — the real question is never "repair or replace?" until someone has established what failed.

The three options, from least to most expensive

1. Module- or component-level repair. The pack is removed, opened, tested, and the failed module or component is replaced or repaired, then the pack is balanced and resealed. This is specialist, high-voltage work — very few shops offer it — but where the rest of the pack is healthy, it's typically a fraction of the cost of a new pack.

2. A reconditioned or remanufactured pack. Specialists rebuild packs using tested modules and sell them as complete replacements, usually at well below the price of a brand-new pack. This is an established route for hybrid batteries especially, where the cars are older and a new pack would exceed the car's value.

3. A brand-new full pack. Sometimes the right answer — widespread degradation, physical damage, or a pack with no economical repair path — but owners should be prepared for a brand-new pack, supplied and fitted, to run well into five figures on many models. On an older, out-of-warranty car, that number can approach what the car is worth, which is exactly why options 1 and 2 exist.

What drives the cost

Any shop that quotes a firm battery price before diagnosing the car is guessing. Pay for a proper diagnosis first; it's the cheapest money in the whole decision.

GTA shops in our directory that do battery work

High-voltage battery work on full EVs is rare. In our directory, Mechanic Nation in Scarborough lists high-voltage battery repair and replacement; Fine Tuned Autos in York lists EV battery repair and maintenance and charging system service; and Fairview Tire AutoPro in Burlington — a NAPA NexDrive-certified EV centre — lists high-voltage battery diagnosis, repair and replacement. Johnston & Magwood in Mississauga lists hybrid and electric battery testing and replacement.

For hybrids, the bench is deeper — hybrid battery work is a mature trade in the GTA. Green Touch Hybrid Battery (North York) and Global Hybrid Battery (Mississauga) specialise in hybrid battery rebuild, repair and replacement, and Greentec Auto offers hybrid and EV battery replacement with remanufactured batteries and mobile installation across the GTA. MobileBattery does mobile hybrid battery replacement across Durham. You'll also find hybrid battery service at AutoNiche in Markham, Sil's Auto Care in Oakville, Eccles Auto Service in Hamilton and Bloor West Auto in Mississauga.

Questions to ask any shop before battery work

1. Have you diagnosed the actual failure — a module, the BMS, the cooling system — or are you quoting a whole pack on assumption?

2. Can the pack be repaired at module level? If not, why not?

3. Are you quoting new, reconditioned or remanufactured parts?

4. What warranty comes with the repair or the replacement pack?

5. Is the repair cost sensible against what my car is worth?

A good battery shop answers all five without flinching — and a good one will sometimes tell you not to spend the money.
